Cervical Cancer from HPV #16 "Surgery Night" fell into Crises from Toradol in IV( a swelling reducer). The second it went in my IV port, my pulse dropped(and stayed below 40, and my blood pressure kept rising to compensate. An emergency to my room all these bells/sirens went off!
Aloha from Honolulu, Hawaii. Queen's Hospital. It's the morning after my radical hysterectomy surgery by Da Vinci robotic assisted machine. And last night was hell, by one huge error.
A drug for inflammation (Toradol) was put in my IV "very quickly" and caused trauma. It burned when it went in this time and the nurse said, "Oh, I was supposed to fed that in slowly." This medicine needs to be fed slowly... Oops... sorry!"
Prior, each time toradol was put into my IV, I immediately felt interior pain where the surgeon had worked, and, i told the nurse it burns my skin at the injection site. And, this injection, was the worst for me! Detrimental, to be exact!
This time, I asked what it was and I said never again, No More! The nurse said, "Sorry your hand is burning, I put it in all at once and it should go in slowly." Well, by doing that, it kicked off nonstop seizures of body shaking, teeth chattering, and me crying, not knowing what was happening to me.
While doctor and nurse quickly discussed what just happened, my long-time mate was there, talking me down, holding my trembling down best he could. He said this looks like a drug overdose. Thank God he was there, because i was shaking like crazy. No clue what was going on. And it took awhile for them to add an antidote into the IV. My legs had to be held down from shaking. My body was out of control. It was nothing I'd ever experienced.
I've never done drugs, not one to take aspirin, or night aids, so my body is a virgin to meds. But, Lord, this was a very bad reaction. The doctor said it's rare to get that reaction but it could happen. And, of course, my prime-rose-path continues down the yellow brick road.
When I returned to normal and the staff left my room, I could hear my pulse beeper going off: on and on and on... each time, the nurse would have to check it and reset it. All night: on and off, on and off. So annoying to sleep. And scary for me, and my mate.
Make sure someone stays with you surgery night. I needed my mate. I could not have gotten through this night without another set of eyes and ears.
So, on my first night, I want to let you know, as the anesthesia wears off, the surgery pain is tolerable with a pain tablet every four hours of oxycodone. (You have to ask for it!!!!!!!!!) So, I wrote down the time it was due next and called the nurse early to go order it.) My OBGYN on my home-island (Kauai) said to always stay "ahead" of your pain-- don't get behind it because you can't play catch up.
I have no complaints except for the lack of sleep, the toradol injection, the 5 holes in my belly. And them continuing to tell me I have to leave at 11am, when I haven't been out of surgery 24 hours! I still have my catheter and IV in. And they keep saying they are sending me home. TODAY! Impossible!!!!!!!! I haven't even had my first walk yet.
Had some cream-of-wheat twice now. Nothing else interests me. Digestion, and anything cold, you feel it move about your body. So, eat very light! No raw veggies for a while yet. I stayed away from any bread too. "Pain meds slow digestion" so why get clogged up on wasted calories and nutrition.
Drinking room temperature liquids is very important.
Anything cold, you will be in pain.
Eat light for easy digestion or you will feel pain.
NO pushing, so drink juice or tea to move bowls. They do give you options: a soft stole pill or a crystal type that you "stir into juice". This issue with digestion is my biggest problem.
Order fruit! In Hawaii, every plate comes with a half of a papaya. So Ono! (Ono means good!)
My worst surgery nightmare came to fruition with this Toradol injection. Please ask them the side affects before you get yours.
Don't expect any sleep either. I've had none. When you arrive home, have it set up to sleep for two days, undisturbed.
