Becoming a member of the European Union is a complex process which doesn’t happen overnight. A country needs to meet strict but fair criteria; for example, good neighbourly relations -necessary to create an environment where both economy and society can prosper.

Regional cooperation helps improve the quality of people's lives through regional initiatives in areas like transport, energy and environment.

Gradual economic integration of a region means more opportunities for enterprises and investors and better and cheaper products for consumers.

Deeper regional cooperation also promotes reconciliation and contributes to peace and stability, which makes Europe a safer place.
